Mistakes some parents during divorce

| Jun 30, 2021 | Child Custody |

There are a lot of things that you have to think about when you’re going through a divorce. If you have children with your ex, you should ensure that you’re putting their needs first. This isn’t always easy, but it is what is best for them.

Some parents make mistakes, especially during the early days of the child custody situation. Knowing what the common mistakes are might help you to avoid them as you’re going through it.

Mistake 1: Engaging in every battle

Some battles don’t deserve your attention. Instead of fighting your ex at every turn, choose your battles carefully. Typically, it’s best to engage in battle only over things that directly impact the child’s health or safety.

Mistake 2: Speaking ill of the other parent

You shouldn’t ever speak ill of your child’s other parent. This includes directly to the child or to anyone who might repeat your words to the children. It’s best to remember that even if your co-parent was a terrible spouse, they can still be a wonderful parent.

Mistake 3: Trying to win your child over

Some parents think that being overly lenient with the kids or buying them things can make them the favorite parent. This type of thinking can actually harm the kids. They should be encouraged to have a loving relationship with both parents. It is damaging to try to one-up one another in the parenting department.

Anyone dealing with child custody matters should ensure that they know their rights under the law. Setting up the parenting plan early in the divorce may make the situation easier. This enables the children to learn their new way of life as quickly as possible.
